Farheen Fatima (b. 1994) is an India based photographer and visual artist. At a very early age she started practicing drawing and distinguishes herself thanks to her rebellious and creative mind. Farheen has always been fascinated by images and how the world is represented through the eyes of others. Naturally, she was drawn to photography.
She engages in narratives themed around the female form and her relationship with nature. In essence her work is the visualization of her “thoughts”, depicting how she sees the world, resulting in poetic imagery. She explores these themes through her photographic practice as well as rhythmic illustrations and geometric collages.
She aims at nurturing a way of seeing which is beyond the male gaze. She examines the geometries of the female body, how painful, sometimes the narratives we inscribe on them. She aims to chronicle the desires, self-worth and experiences of women through her work.
Her relationship with nature started as a young girl and has grown into a spiritual experience. She creates intimate, poignant and inviting images around her love affair with nature. She loves things that create echoes. She believes that when you focus on something you can’t see, it all happens in slow motion. Those in between moments when everything happens. For her, it’s all about observing and extracting beauty from everything.
She is a self-taught photographer and that’s why her process is experimental. She pokes around and does not have a preconceived notion of what the outcome of her exploration should be. She engages in these practices precisely to see what is possible and she stays curious about the results. She holds two Masters degrees in History and History of Visual Art from Panjab University, Chandigarh.
She is an independent fashion and portrait photographer. Her work has been exhibited in India, Germany, Spain, Hongkong, and the United States. She has been published in Better Photography India Magazine, The Bengaluru Review, Flora Fiction Literary Magazine, The Design Collective Magazine, Vogue Italia Photo Vogue, Inspiro India Magazine among others.
